The Montessori Method
Maria Montessori developed the Montessori Method in Rome in 1907. This method uses a hands on learning environment in which children are allowed to choose which program materials they want to explore. Children are given unstructured time to do their work.

The Montessori curriculum divides learning into five categories: practical life, sensory awareness, language, math and culture. Practical life includes tasks such as getting dressed, preparing food, and cleaning up messes. To learn sensory awareness, children are encouraged to explore their five senses (sight, touch, smell and hearing) Language lessons teach children to recognize letters and phonic sounds, and math lessons use hands on learning exercises to teach children about numbers. Cultural studies focus on animals, nature, geography and science.

Maria Montessori believed that children learn at their own pace.
